'Hey Auto' yet to attract takers: Deccan Chronicle

KOZHIKODE: The district administration is yet to evoke interest among the public and auto drivers in the Android App ‘Hey Auto’ that aims at helping folks to easily locate auto rickshaws in their vicinity for service.

During a meeting-cum-workshop organised for the city drivers to introduce the mobile application, the administration could only manage to draw the attention of less than 50 participants.

However, the project could not meet its real intention. The app developed by experts of Calicut Forum for Information Technology, has been downloaded by more than 1000 folks and thanks to the Facebook post of the district collector popularizing the app.

According to his personal assistant Nijeesh, who is in charge of the project, Hey Auto, could not turn that effective as expected.

“We wanted to bring together various trade union organizations and members, but during the first workshop, very few people took part” he said.

“We wanted to streamline the entire system with the mutual support of auto drivers”. The mobile application was designed in such a way that, through the GPRS facilities on the smartphones of the needy and the auto drivers, one could have quick access to contact number of auto drivers of nearby location.

The application also had the facility for passengers to rate the services including the behaviors of auto drivers, which was often a point of discussion.

Through this rate, passengers could hire the auto drivers they wish to, which could also help in replacing the culture of long waiting of rickshaws.

Nod for Kozhikode Public Library renovation: Calicut New Media

KOZHIKODE: Minsiter Dr.M.K.Muneer has said that the Kozhikode Public Library would be upgraded in international standard. The face-lifting works will begin on 5 August on wards. During the renovation works, the ground floor will  remain closed.

The modification works will be completed floor by floor, in  a systematic manner.

Modern digital library, language lab, skill developing facility, braille library  are the features of the renovation project.

The British Council, German Goethe  Zentrum, Alliance Franchise and one gulf country’s co-operation is expected in the work.

A group of cultural leaders and writers including Civic Chandran and Kalpetta Narayanan had submitted a memorandum to the collector to save Kozhikode’s two decades old  cultural center from a dilapidated condition.

Kozhikode Public Library started functioning in 1996. While many libraries in the state moved ahead as excellent reading and research centres, Kozhikode witnessed a stand still because the library had a dispute with the state library council.

The library has been functioning just with the book s and facilities it had in the beginning time.

Even if the centre has a spacious building in the heart of the city,it has not been well-maintained. Many parts of the building are in a dilapidated condition. The library launched in 1994 as per a government order (G/O 151/94/Higher Education 21-10-1994) under the societies act. However, the Kerala High court ruled that  the society’s legal existence is non-existential.

As per the court’s verdict, the state government published new G.O. This G.O was challenged by Societies governing body members.

When Kozhikode is lacking a best research library felicity for students and higher learners, the need to make it a centre as in the status of the State Central Library in Thiruvananthapuram has been underscored by the petitioners. Digital library, children’s library were other objective of this library during its initial days.
